| Sunday Reflections: Mastery and the Hero’s Journey |
I had the incredible opportunity to be at the Grand Opening of the New Alliance Headquarters in Atlanta. Getting to see and spend time with old friends and training partners, especially my first Jiujitsu instructor, Professor Jacare was amazing. I told Jacare that even though it was a new academy being there brought back many fond memories. During the seminar we learned techniques from some of the best Jiujitsu practitioners ever, including World Champions, Hall of Famers, and Olympians. However, what I took away from the event was more than just technique. There were three things that we speak about quite often that I would link to my experience. First, is this idea of the pursuit of Mastery. Everyone that taught on Saturday is literally a Master of Jiujitsu. They have spent their lives working to Master their art. Although they are all Masters, there is one key component that was illustrated by Master Jacare’s comment when Introducing Lucas Lepri before Lucas was about to teach. Jacare said, “ I’m going to sit back and watch and learn,” This is the epitome of a growth mindset and the mindset which you should emulate if you want to master anything. Second, is the idea of energy. There was an incredible energy at the event as a whole but also there was great energy from each instructor. Each person teaching has their own special energy but the passion for what they are teaching is evident even though they have been doing so for many years. This energy came out not only during the seminar but at dinner afterwards. Although Jacare is much older now, you could feel his passion and energy increase when tellling stories from the early days back in Atlanta when he was working to establish the school when Jiujitsu was relatively unknown in the United States Thirdly, if you choose a path of mastery whether it be martial arts, fitness, or anything for that matter, it will resemble the Hero’s Journey. If you are not familiar with Joseph Campbell’s narrative framework of the Hero’s Journey here are the steps. It consists of three overarching sections—Departure (or Separation), Initiation, and Return—divided into 12 specific steps. Below is a breakdown of these steps: I. Departure (Separation) 1. The Ordinary World The hero begins in their familiar, everyday life, unaware of the extraordinary journey ahead. This stage establishes their background, flaws, and context. 2. The Call to Adventure A challenge, problem, or opportunity arises, inviting the hero to leave their comfort zone and embark on a journey. 3. Refusal of the Call The hero initially resists the call due to fear, doubt, or a sense of inadequacy, showing their vulnerability. 4. Meeting the Mentor A mentor or guide provides wisdom, tools, or encouragement to help the hero face the challenges ahead. This figure often represents experience or insight. 5. Crossing the Threshold The hero commits to the journey, leaving the familiar world behind and entering a new, unknown realm filled with uncertainty and adventure. II. Initiation 6. Tests, Allies, and Enemies The hero faces trials and meets allies and enemies, learning the rules of the new world and building the skills needed for success. 7. Approach to the Inmost Cave The hero approaches a pivotal challenge or confrontation, often requiring deep reflection or preparation for the ordeal ahead. 8. The Ordeal The hero faces a life-changing crisis or major challenge, often confronting their greatest fears. This is the climax of the journey, where transformation begins. 9. The Reward (Seizing the Sword) After surviving the ordeal, the hero claims the reward, which may be a physical object, insight, or newfound power. This reward often represents growth or enlightenment. III. Return 10. The Road Back The hero begins their journey home, facing new challenges as they attempt to reintegrate their newfound knowledge or powers into the ordinary world. 11. The Resurrection The hero faces a final test, often symbolizing a death-and-rebirth experience. They emerge transformed, embodying their growth and newfound strength. 12. Return with the Elixir The hero returns to the ordinary world, bringing back the “elixir” (knowledge, power, or healing) to benefit others and transform their community. This leads to the last idea which brings everything together. Ultimately you are the Hero of that Journey and we are here to help mentor and guide you. We are also here to help you create the energy you need to pursue the path of Mastery whether it be martial arts, fitness, or anything else. |
