The Biology of Belief

The Biology of Belief by Bruce Lipton is a fascinating read. He does a great job of explaining the power of belief from a scientific perspective. Here are a few key points.

1.  Our genetics do not necessarily determine our destiny.
When I studied biology years ago, we were taught the concept of genetic determinism. My interpretation of this concept is that your genes, that is your DNA, predominantly determines who you become.  For example, if your parents had heart disease, cancer, diabetes, or were overweight you then had a disposition for some of the same issues. It was also, said that your IQ was determined at a very early age.

From a physical development perspective, you were predestined to have a certain ratio of fast to slow twitch muscle fiber and propensity to build muscle, and to be lean. I can remember being told that the length of muscle bellies determined your potential in that endeavor.  I was told that I had short muscle bellies in my gastrocnemius and that no matter how hard I trained my calves they would never be big.  Well, they never have been big and now I don’t care, but maybe the reason I never developed them was because I bought into somebody else’s BS and didn’t try to build them.

What Dr. Lipton points out in his book and goes about it in a very scientific manner is that genetic determinism has given way and been replaced by epigenetics. Epigenetics is based on the idea that environmental factors influence the expression of those genes. Dr. Lipton states that even our beliefs and perceptions can influence that expression.

2. Between 95 and 99% of what we do daily is subconscious.
This one really got me thinking, no pun intended.  I realize that much of what we do everyday is based on habits and rituals, but to think that up to 99% of what we do is based on our subconscious is amazing.  You can think of your subconscious like storage of a bunch of tapes or programs that run automatically.  Some of them are instinctual such as our built in reflexes; others are programs that we once held consciously like when we were learning to walk or drive but are now predominantly subconscious. The subconscious is incredible.  However, if we have tapes or programs that are faulty and don’t support us positively, the subconscious can hold us back from our true potential.

3.  We have the power to reprogram our subconscious and influence the expression of our genes thereby changing our destiny.
Dr. Lipton talks about being questioned during one of his seminars on this subject of having the ability to influence our DNA and subconscious and therefore our life. The question was, “If these things are true, then why don’t you have a better life.”.  He took this to heart and realized that although he believed the science he was teaching, he really wasn’t taking action and developing the life he truly wanted.  After that point he began changing his life and in his own words now feels like he is living a heaven on earth,

When we take these ideas and apply them to a couple of areas we discussed earlier we can see the potential.  For example, some people are told that they can’t improve their IQ once they are an adult yet, biohacker , Dave Asprey, improved his by 18 points as an adult.,

I mentioned earlier about my supposed lack of potential for bodybuilding success. In the early days of his bodybuilding career, Arnold didn’t have large calves either. However, he chose not to believe that he couldn’t build them and went on to make this weak body part a strong one. He also, didn’t listen to others when they said he couldn’t be a successful actor or governor of California.

We can choose to control or conscious mind and write or rewrite programs to support us.  There are many methods to do this.  We are teaching some of those methods through our online coaching programs,
