In his book, How to Fail at Everything and Still Win Big, Scott Adams states that “Losers have goals. Winners have Systems”. This statement definitely got my attention. After studying this concept further, I realize that what he is really talking about is that to be successful you need to focus not just on the end goal but the process. This is something former Alabama football coach, Nick Saban, taught to his very successful football program.
The way I see the process is that you first need to set the goal and have introspection on why you have that goal to begin with. Next, you need to have a plan or system to achieve that goal. Lastly, you need to honor your word by focusing on and following the plan or system.
My vision for has become more clear of late, in that I realize our programs have systems that are built for long term physical and mental development. I can’t say that I originally set out with that in mind but that is what it has evolved into. This may be expected of our martial arts program and my training in martial arts probably has a huge influence on this evolution. What really has become more clear is that our gym in general is built for the same thing. It is certainly ok and often recommended to choose to hyper focus for a shorter period of time to achieve specific goals, such as preparation for a competition or special event. However, our training is built predominantly for the long haul not for a quick fix.
We are working hard to better articulate how to use the systems we have in place based on the goals you have for yourself. The first step in that process is to have a goal. Below is a link to a webinar by SealFit and Unbeatable Mind founder, Mark Divine, on the process. After you have gone through this process we can then begin working with you more specifically by setting up a strategy session to determine the system or plan of action most appropriate to help you reach your goal.
