In our effort to help you “Close the Gap” to becoming the best version of yourself we have been encouraging through our first challenge of the year to focus on “Winning in the Mind.” Part of this process involves setting good targets or goals. We recommend using the SMART-P process for this. Set targets or goals that are: S-Specific M- Measureable A- Attainable R- Relevant T- Time specific P- Positively Stated Once you have your goals or targets you can run them through a couple of exercises to refine them. As we mentioned last week, having a goal that you do not take action on is useless. You can use the Motivation Equation to help find the motivation to take action or to reevaluate your goal to find one you are more motivated to attain. Motivation = Energy x Value x Expectancy / Impulsivity x Delay This week I would like to share another tool that you can use with your goals called WOOP. W- Wish (what do you really want) O-Outcome (what are the benefits of you reaching your goal, what is the why) O- Obstacles (it is great to be optimistic but you need to know that any worthwhile goal will come with obstacles) P-Plan Gabrielle Oettingen is a world-class researcher and author of the book “Rethinking Positive Thinking” who has spent her career studying the science of making your dreams come to life. She created something called “WOOP” to help us make our dreams a reality. Here’s the quick take: Start with your Wish. What do you really want? If everything went just right what would that look and feel like? Next, what are the benefits you would receive if that wish came to fruition? What is the why behind the goal? Next, and I think this is the key to the WOOP process, rub this wish up against reality by taking a realistic look at what obstacles may stand in your way. No truly worthwhile goal will come without obstacles. If you are truly on the Hero’s Journey you will be battling dragons not sidestepping lizards. Lastly, you need a plan. What I have witnessed in many instances is that people go through this process in the reverse order. In other words, they confuse the plan with the goal. For instance, some may say their goal is to workout for x number of times per week or for some time per week. That can be a goal but I consider it to be more of a plan. If you simply show up to “workout” and spend time at the gym without truly knowing what benefit you want to get from your training I believe you will be less successful than if you know exactly why you are there and what you are working towards. When you encounter obstacles you will be more motivated to keep taking action. Part of the plan can be anticipating these obstacles ahead of time and being proactive when you hit the next one. I believe if you start with the wish and the why, then rub it up against reality your success rate will be high. Commit • Show Up • Don’t Quit • Be Uncommon • Be Your Best Self– Billy |
